“It Will Take a Teacher Five Years to Earn What We Make in a Week” – Galamsey Operators Boast
Some illegal miners, popularly known as galamsey operators, have sparked debate on social media after openly flaunting the huge sums they claim to earn from illegal mining activities in Ghana.
In a viral video, the operators defended galamsey despite increasing public pressure on the government to intensify the fight against illegal mining, which continues to destroy water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves across the country.
According to the operators, they made GH¢4,000 within just one week through galamsey activities and argued that many legitimate jobs in Ghana do not offer such earnings within the same period.
“You always say the government should end galamsey, but see the money we’ve made. We’ve earned GH¢4,000 in just one week from it. It will take a teacher five years to earn the money we make in a week,” they reportedly stated.
Their comments have triggered mixed reactions online, with many Ghanaians expressing concern over the growing attraction of illegal mining among the youth due to unemployment and economic hardship.

Others also criticized the comparison made against teachers, stressing that educators play a vital role in national development despite the financial challenges associated with the profession.
The issue of galamsey remains one of Ghana’s biggest environmental and economic concerns. Over the years, several governments have launched operations and task forces to clamp down on illegal mining activities, but the practice continues to thrive in many parts of the country.
Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that unchecked illegal mining could have devastating long-term effects on Ghana’s water resources and agricultural sector if stronger measures are not implemented.
The latest comments by the galamsey operators have once again reignited conversations about unemployment, youth empowerment, and the urgent need for sustainable economic opportunities for young people across the country.
