17-Year-Old Student Electrocuted While Charging iPhone
A 17-year-old final-year student of Asanteman Senior High School has tragically lost his life after being electrocuted while using his mobile phone during a heavy rainstorm at Meduma in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region.
The deceased, identified as Harrison, was reportedly a candidate preparing to sit for the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to reports, the incident occurred on Friday, May 8, 2026, when Harrison returned home from school during a rainstorm. He is said to have plugged his iPhone 6 into a charger and continued using the device while it remained connected to the power source.
Reports indicate that a lightning strike in the area triggered a sudden power surge, which traveled through the charger and electrocuted the student instantly.

The electrocution reportedly caused severe burns around his neck and ears. Family members and residents were left devastated by the tragic incident.
His body has since been deposited at the morgue, while the police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The unfortunate development has sparked renewed conversations about electrical safety during thunderstorms, particularly the dangers associated with using electronic devices while they are charging during unstable weather conditions.
Residents and social media users have also expressed sorrow over the death of the young student, with many extending condolences to his family, friends, and school community.
