GNAT Condemns Alleged Assault on Teachers by Military Personnel in Bawku

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has strongly condemned what it describes as the physical assault of teachers by military personnel in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East Region following a misunderstanding involving a student.
In a press release dated May 8, 2026, and signed by the General Secretary, Mr. Thomas Musah Tanko, GNAT stated that the incident, which reportedly occurred on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, has left several teachers physically injured and emotionally traumatized.
According to the statement, the confrontation escalated after some military personnel allegedly stormed school premises and attacked teachers in the area. GNAT described the actions of the soldiers as “inhuman, uncouth, and uncivilized,” stressing that no teacher deserves such treatment under any circumstance.
The association identified some of the affected schools as Bawku Senior High School, Bawku Technical Institute, and Bawku/Azanga Senior High School. GNAT noted that teachers in these schools were subjected to severe beatings and intimidation.

GNAT further revealed that one teacher from Bawku/Azanga Senior High School reportedly sustained injuries after being assaulted in the presence of students, while several others are said to be receiving medical attention.
The teacher union expressed disappointment over the continued insecurity in Bawku and its impact on education, emphasizing that teachers posted to conflict-prone areas should be protected and supported rather than exposed to violence.
As part of its demands, GNAT called on the government and relevant security authorities to immediately investigate the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The association also demanded compensation for the affected teachers and guarantees for their safety.
GNAT warned that if urgent steps are not taken to address the matter and protect teachers in the municipality, the association may be forced to advise its members to stay away from the area for their own safety.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and welfare of teachers across the country and urged authorities to act swiftly to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
