GNAT Announces Massive Benefits for Teachers in 2026 – Full Details Inside

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has announced a series of significant decisions following its National Council meeting held on April 29, 2026. The resolutions are aimed at improving teacher welfare, expanding professional development opportunities, and addressing critical issues within the education sector.

Comprehensive Insurance Package for Members

A key highlight of the meeting is the introduction of a comprehensive welfare insurance scheme for all GNAT members, to be funded through member dues. The proposed benefits include:

  • GHC10,000 compensation in the event of a member’s death
  • GHC10,000 for permanent incapacitation
  • GHC6,000 for the death of a spouse
  • GHC2,500 for hospitalization exceeding 10 days
  • GHC5,000 support for critical illnesses

This initiative is expected to provide financial security and relief to teachers and their families during difficult times.

DSTV Training and Income Opportunities

In a move to diversify income streams for teachers, GNAT has proposed training programs in DSTV installation. Members who participate will gain practical skills to generate additional income. The initiative will also offer reduced subscription costs and opportunities in the sale of DSTV equipment.

Doctorate Programme at Subsidized Cost

The GNAT Institute for Research and Industrial Relations Studies (IRIRS) will roll out a three-year Doctorate in Education programme at a subsidized rate exclusively for members. This initiative is designed to enhance academic and professional growth within the teaching fraternity.

Amended Constitution to Be Made Accessible

The Council also confirmed that the amended 2026 Constitution and Rules of GNAT will be made available online. This will allow members easy access to updated governance guidelines and operational frameworks.

Call for Increased Teacher Recruitment

Addressing the persistent teacher shortage, GNAT is urging the government to increase recruitment numbers this year. The Council emphasized that priority should be given to individuals who completed their training earlier but are yet to be employed.

Leadership Appointment to Teachers’ Fund

Mr. Godwin Andam, the Central Regional Chairman of GNAT, has been appointed and confirmed as the new Chairman of the Teachers’ Fund Board. His confirmation took place during the Annual General Meeting held at Abankro in Ejisu.

Increment in Cancer and Membership Dues

The Council has approved an increase in cancer dues from GHC5.00 to GHC10.00, effective May 2026. Additionally, the annual membership dues will see a 2% increment based on the salary of a diploma holder. According to GNAT, this adjustment is necessary to fund the implementation of key member-focused initiatives.

Mutual Fund Contribution Decision Put on Hold

A proposal to increase the minimum contribution to the GNAT Mutual Fund from GHC120 to GHC150 has been suspended. The Annual General Meeting directed fund managers to put the increment on hold while encouraging members to make voluntary contributions instead.
