GES Secures Approval to Pay Salary Arrears for Staff in Five Instalments
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that approval has been granted for the payment of salary arrears owed to its staff, bringing relief to many employees who have experienced delays in receiving their entitlements.
In an official letter dated April 20, 2026, and addressed to all Regional Directors, GES management disclosed that the Ministry of Finance has authorized the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to process the payment of the arrears. The approval covers eligible GES staff who accumulated unpaid salaries between August 1, 2024, and November 2025.
According to the statement, the outstanding arrears will be paid in five instalments. However, the payment schedule outlined in the letter highlights four specific months; May, June, July, and August during which staff will receive four months’ worth of arrears each month.
This structured disbursement is aimed at easing the financial burden on affected staff while ensuring a manageable and systematic payment process by the government.

GES management has directed all Regional Directors to communicate the development promptly to Heads of Schools to ensure that all eligible staff are adequately informed.
The letter, signed by Professor Smile Dzisi, Acting Deputy Director-General (Management Services) for the Director-General, emphasized the importance of timely dissemination of the information to avoid misinformation and uncertainty among staff.
The development is expected to bring significant relief to teachers and other GES employees who have long awaited the clearance of their salary arrears. It also reflects ongoing efforts by the government to address compensation challenges within the education sector and improve staff welfare.
Stakeholders in the education sector will be closely monitoring the implementation of the payment plan to ensure that the process is executed smoothly and transparently.
