Latest GES Recruitment Update: Portal Closure and Next Steps Explained

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has defended the recent closure of the Ghana Education Service (GES) recruitment portal, describing the move as a strategic step to manage overwhelming application numbers and safeguard the integrity of the recruitment process.
Speaking to the media in Accra, Mr. Iddrisu explained that the decision was necessary to ensure a structured, transparent, and efficient recruitment system that would not be strained by excessive entries.
According to the Minister, the portal recorded an unprecedented surge in interest, receiving over 40,000 applications within a short period after it was opened. While he acknowledged that the high turnout reflects the increasing interest among graduates in joining the teaching profession, he noted that it also presents significant administrative challenges.
“We received in excess of 40,000 applications, which clearly shows the high level of interest. However, we are targeting 7,000 recruits for this phase,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
He emphasized that the recruitment process would be strictly merit-based, with only applicants who meet the required assessment criteria advancing to the final stages of selection.
Explaining further, the Minister revealed that the portal had been configured to automatically shut down once the targeted number of applications was reached. This, he said, was to prevent what he described as a “stampede of numbers” that could undermine efficiency and fairness.
“We did not want a situation where the system is overwhelmed beyond control. The closure was structured to ensure that the process remains credible and manageable,” he added.

Mr. Iddrisu stressed that managing a controlled number of applications would enable the GES to conduct thorough screening and assessments without delays or logistical difficulties. He reiterated that the focus of the recruitment exercise is not merely on numbers but on quality.
“This is not just about numbers; it is about quality. We are committed to recruiting competent professionals who can contribute meaningfully to the education sector,” he noted.
The Minister further assured applicants that the process remains ongoing and that all submitted applications will undergo rigorous evaluation to ensure that only qualified and capable candidates are selected.
He also disclosed that unsuccessful applicants and others who were unable to apply would have another opportunity, as the portal is expected to be reopened once the Ministry of Finance grants the necessary financial clearance to support additional recruitment.
“This recruitment exercise is tied directly to budgetary provisions. As soon as we receive clearance from the Finance Ministry, the portal will be reopened,” he said.
Mr. Iddrisu, therefore, urged applicants to remain patient and maintain confidence in the process.
“We understand the anxiety among job seekers, but we want to assure citizens that the process is fair, transparent, and ongoing,” he concluded.
