GNAT Announces Vacancy for General Secretary: How to Apply
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has announced a vacancy for the position of General Secretary, inviting suitably qualified Ghanaian professionals with strong leadership qualities and extensive experience in the education sector to apply.
The announcement, published in the Daily Graphic on Monday, August 31, 2026, outlines two entry routes for interested applicants: Direct Entry and In-Service Entry.
Job Purpose
According to the advertisement, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing sound advice on policy formulation and strengthening the association’s administrative systems.
The General Secretary will also be expected to translate GNAT’s policies and decisions into programmes that will help achieve the strategic objectives of the association.
Qualification and Experience Requirements
Direct Entry
Applicants seeking consideration through the Direct Entry route must:
- Hold a Master’s degree in a related field from a recognised institution.
- Be a professional teacher and a member in good standing.
- Have a qualification in Labour Studies, which will be an added advantage.
- Be on the grade of Director II in the Education Service, with at least three years in the grade.
- Have served for at least four years before reaching the compulsory retirement age of 60 years.
- Successfully pass a competitive selection interview.
In-Service Entry
Applicants applying through the In-Service Entry route must:
- Be available in the grade of General Secretary.
- Hold a Master’s degree in a related field from a recognised institution.
- Be a professional teacher and a member in good standing.
- Possess a qualification in Labour Studies, which will be an added advantage.
- Be in a senior management position or above, such as Director, Deputy Director, Head of Department, Regional Secretary or Assistant Head of Department.
- Have at least five years of working experience.
- Have at least four years remaining before reaching the compulsory retirement age of 60 years.
- Have maintained a consistent good staff performance appraisal rating for at least three years.
- Successfully pass a competitive selection interview.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will serve as the Chief Negotiator of GNAT and will be expected to ensure strict compliance with the association’s constitution, national laws and relevant regulations.
Other responsibilities include:
- Advising on policy formulation and implementing policies, decisions and programmes.
- Protecting the financial and material resources of the association.
- Providing guidance and support to members while promoting their welfare.
- Monitoring the implementation of programmes and evaluating results.
- Reviewing policies and procedures to maintain relevance.
- Managing environmental demands affecting the association.
- Representing the views of GNAT on education, the economy, teaching conditions and public policy.
- Collaborating with stakeholders in education and labour development.
- Supervising and appraising the performance of direct reports.
- Performing other duties assigned by the National Delegates Conference, National Council, National Executive and National Officers in accordance with GNAT’s constitution and rules.

Required Competencies
GNAT is seeking a candidate with strong expertise in labour relations, financial management, organisational leadership and education policy.
Applicants are also expected to demonstrate excellent negotiation, communication, strategic planning and decision-making abilities.
The ideal candidate should be able to work effectively under pressure, inspire members, monitor progress against timelines and demonstrate strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
Knowledge of procurement processes and contracts will also be considered an advantage.
