Teacher Breaks Down in Tears After 18 Months with Just One Month Pay

A teacher and nursing mother who teaches at Ngleshie Islamic Basic School has broken down in tears, sharing her painful experience amid ongoing protests by unpaid teachers across Ghana.
The emotional scene unfolded during an interview following demonstrations by aggrieved teachers who marched to the Jubilee House and the Ministry of Finance Ghana to demand the payment of long-overdue salary arrears.
Visibly distressed, the teacher revealed that although she has been posted for one year and six months, she has received only one month’s salary. According to her, the remaining one year and five months of arrears are still unpaid, a situation that has pushed many affected teachers to protest in search of answers.
“I have regretted choosing teaching as a profession,” she said as she wept, describing the emotional and financial strain the delay has placed on her life.
She pleaded with authorities to urgently intervene and settle their arrears, noting what she described as unfair treatment compared to other public sector workers.

“We were employed and posted before the nurses, yet they have been paid and continue to receive their salaries, while we are still struggling,” she lamented.
The teacher further recounted how she continued to work throughout her pregnancy without receiving any salary.
“I was heavily pregnant while going to work every day without pay, and I still haven’t been paid,” she added.
Her story reflects the growing frustration among newly posted teachers nationwide, many of whom say repeated protests and appeals have yielded little results.
The ongoing demonstrations highlight deepening concerns within the education sector, as affected teachers continue to demand swift and decisive action from government to address the delays and restore confidence in the profession.
