GES Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools; BECE Dates Announced

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the academic calendar for the 2026/2027 school year for all basic schools across the country, outlining key dates for reopening, vacations, and examinations.

In a statement issued by its Public Relations Unit on May 6, 2026, GES indicated that the calendar applies to Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools nationwide. The release is aimed at guiding school heads, teachers, learners, parents, and other stakeholders in preparing adequately for the academic year.

First Term Details

The first term, which spans 15 weeks, will commence on September 8, 2026, and end on December 17, 2026. Students will then proceed on vacation from December 18, 2026, to January 4, 2027. A mid-term break has been scheduled for November 5 and 6, 2026.

Second Term Schedule

The second term will run for 12 weeks, beginning on January 5, 2027, and closing on March 25, 2027. The vacation period for this term will be from March 26 to April 19, 2027.

Third Term and Academic Year End

The third term, lasting 14 weeks, will start on April 20, 2027, and end on July 22, 2027. The academic year will officially conclude with the final vacation beginning July 23, 2027.

BECE Dates Confirmed

GES also confirmed that the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be held from Wednesday, May 5 to Wednesday, May 12, 2027. This examination remains a critical milestone for Junior High School students transitioning to Senior High School.

Public Holidays and Breaks

The Service reminded stakeholders that all public holidays within the academic year will be duly observed. Additionally, a two-day mid-term break will be maintained in each term to provide students and teachers with necessary rest periods.

GES has urged all school heads, teachers, parents, and guardians to take note of the calendar and ensure proper planning to facilitate a smooth and effective academic year.
