WAEC Arrests 5 Over BECE Malpractice as Nationwide Crackdown Intensifies

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of five individuals in connection with examination malpractice during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination across the country.

According to WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, the suspects were apprehended for engaging in various forms of irregularities, although full details are yet to be disclosed.

“There have been some incidents so far. About four or five people have been picked up already,” he revealed, adding that the identities of those involved and the specifics of their offences will be made public after investigations are concluded.

Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews on Monday, May 4, Mr Kapi acknowledged that despite enhanced supervision and strict invigilation measures, malpractice continues to be a challenge in the examination process.

He explained that WAEC has intensified its preventive efforts by organizing extensive briefing sessions for examination officials. These sessions involve key stakeholders such as district directors, supervisors, and invigilators, and are aimed at reinforcing the consequences of malpractice while promoting integrity.

Beyond internal measures, the Council is also engaging a broader range of stakeholders to combat the issue. Education directors, traditional authorities, politicians, and opinion leaders are being encouraged to play active roles in discouraging examination malpractice within their communities.

“Examination malpractice is inimical to our development and the future of education in this country,” Mr Kapi emphasized.

To further strengthen monitoring, WAEC has deployed additional personnel nationwide, including officials from its headquarters in Accra as well as regional offices. The move, according to Mr Kapi, is intended to enhance accountability and ensure that examination officials adhere strictly to regulations.

“We are putting more people in the field to ‘watch the watchmen’ and ensure these incidents are reduced to the barest minimum,” he added.

The development underscores WAEC’s renewed commitment to safeguarding the credibility of the BECE and maintaining high standards in Ghana’s education system, as authorities continue to crack down on malpractice.
