GES Announces District-Level Orientation for Nationwide Health and Disability Screening Exercise

The Ghana Education Service (GES), through its Special Education Division, has announced a district-level orientation programme ahead of a nationwide health and disability screening exercise targeting Kindergarten One (KG1) and Primary One pupils in public basic schools across the country.

In a letter dated June 9, 2026, and signed on behalf of the Director-General by Helena Mensah, the orientation forms part of efforts to implement Ghana’s Inclusive Education Policy and ensure early identification of health and disability-related challenges among learners.

According to GES, the screening exercise is being organized in collaboration with the School Health Education Programme (SHEP) Unit, the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Unit, and the Ghana Health Service, with financial support from the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP).

The exercise is expected to cover public basic schools in all 261 districts across Ghana’s 16 regions. It aims to assist school managers and parents in identifying pupils with health needs and possible disabilities, enabling timely referrals for treatment and necessary interventions.

As part of preparations for the nationwide exercise, Regional Directors of Education have been directed to release key officers who participated in a recently concluded national orientation programme. These officers include Special Education Coordinators, SHEP Officers, ECE Coordinators, and Regional Assessment Officers, who will in turn train district screening teams within their respective regions.

The district-level orientation and training sessions are scheduled to take place from Monday, June 15, 2026, to Friday, June 26, 2026.

GES has also instructed Regional Directors to notify Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education to release district officers, including Special Education Coordinators, SHEP Officers, ECE Coordinators, and available Resource Teachers, to participate in a one-day non-residential orientation programme at the district level.

The Service believes the initiative will strengthen efforts to identify learners requiring specialized support at an early stage, thereby improving access to quality and inclusive education for all children.

GES indicated that detailed schedules for each district have been attached to the communication and urged all stakeholders to cooperate to ensure the successful implementation of the exercise.
