CHASS Appeals for Postponement of School Reopening
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has officially called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to reconsider the reopening of schools scheduled for January 3, 2025.
This appeal was made following an emergency meeting convened by CHASS’s National Executive Council (NEC) on December 31, 2024.
In a formal statement issued by CHASS, the leadership highlighted several concerns, primarily the unresolved payment of arrears owed to schools. These arrears include funds for perishable and recurrent expenses, as well as costs incurred from the transportation of food items from distribution centers.
CHASS noted that earlier requests, communicated through letters to the Minister of Education and the Director General of GES dated August 12, November 13, and December 20, 2024, have yet to be addressed.

Impact on Stakeholders
CHASS has assured parents and guardians that they will be informed of any updates through regional CHASS branches and Parents Associations (PAs). This decision underscores the frustration stemming from the unresponsiveness of relevant authorities, which has significantly hindered CHASS’s ability to effectively manage school operations.
Leadership Directive
The leadership of CHASS has reminded its members to adhere strictly to the directive, emphasizing that non-compliance will be considered a betrayal of trust. A follow-up reminder has also been forwarded to the Director General of GES, urging prompt resolution of the outstanding issues.
CHASS assured its members that they will be kept informed of further developments as the situation unfolds. The association expressed hope for a swift resolution to ensure the smooth reopening of schools without financial constraints.
Signed by the National Secretary of CHASS, Baro Primus, the communiqué concluded with an appeal for cooperation from all stakeholders to address the challenges facing Ghana’s secondary schools.
