Philomena Esi Agudu Wins Maiden Youth Advocacy Challenge Organized by the Ghana Library Authority
The Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) has crowned Philomena Esi Agudu as the winner of the inaugural Youth Advocacy Challenge, a new initiative aimed at empowering young voices to influence national discourse. Ms. Agudu, a 23-year-old medical student at the University of Cape Coast, triumphed in the latest quarter of the competition, which is part of the Youth Engagement Centre project—an initiative supported by UNICEF.
The Youth Advocacy Challenge offers a unique platform for young people to express their views on critical national issues, with the overarching goal of creating informed and active youth who can contribute to national development. The competition aligns with GhLA’s mission to foster a generation of change-makers by engaging them in meaningful dialogue around pressing issues. Each quarter, a new theme is introduced, challenging participants to propose solutions and advocate for positive change.
This quarter’s theme, focused on education, saw Ms. Agudu emerge victorious with her compelling article titled “Inclusive Education in Ghana: Bridging the Gap for Girls and Persons with Disabilities.” The article stood out for its practical and innovative solutions to the educational challenges faced by marginalized groups, particularly girls and persons with disabilities. Ms. Agudu’s piece highlighted the barriers these groups encounter within Ghana’s educational system and provided actionable recommendations to improve inclusivity and accessibility.
Her thought-provoking work resonated deeply with both judges and the general public, sparking important conversations on the need for systemic change. By raising awareness and proposing real solutions, Ms. Agudu’s article not only contributed to the ongoing dialogue on inclusive education but also emphasized the importance of ensuring that every child, regardless of gender or ability, has equal access to quality education.

The Youth Advocacy Challenge not only provides an opportunity for young people to share their ideas but also offers them a platform to influence policy and inspire societal transformation.
The collaboration between GhLA and UNICEF plays a pivotal role in ensuring that youth are equipped with the tools and support they need to engage in national conversations and advocate for meaningful change. Through initiatives like the Youth Advocacy Challenge, both organizations aim to create a space where young voices can be heard and their perspectives can shape the future of Ghana.
Looking ahead, the next quarter of the Youth Advocacy Challenge will focus on health, with new application dates to be announced soon. With each passing quarter, the initiative promises to continue its mission of nurturing young leaders who are ready to contribute to the advancement of their country.
In conclusion, Philomena Esi Agudu’s win in the Youth Advocacy Challenge marks an important milestone in the efforts to promote youth participation in critical national conversations.
