GES, VVOB and Partners to Trial-Test Gender-Responsive Study and Career Guidance Handbooks in Selected Districts
The Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with VVOB – Education for Development, the National Teaching Council (NTC), and the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training Service (GTVETS), has announced the trial testing of newly developed Gender-Responsive Study and Career Guidance (GRSCG) handbooks for Junior High Schools across selected districts in Ghana.
According to an official letter dated May 7, 2026, the initiative forms part of a broader project aimed at strengthening Ghana’s capacity to deliver scalable and quality Teacher Continuous Professional Development (TCPD) on gender-responsive study and career guidance in schools.
The project seeks to empower well-trained teachers to confidently implement innovative practices that will help students make informed educational and career decisions, identify their talents and interests, and better understand educational pathways leading to various professions within the labour market.
The programme is also expected to support students in overcoming barriers, clarifying career goals, and connecting formal education with workplace and industry-based learning opportunities.
As part of the current phase of the project, GES, NTC, GTVETS, and VVOB are jointly developing a scalable TCPD package for JHS teachers on GRSCG. The package includes an Operational Manual, a Professional Learning Community (PLC) Handbook, and a Facilitators’ Guide to support school-based implementation.
The documents will be trial-tested in five selected districts between May and July 2026. The selected districts are:

- Shama District – Western Region
- Afadjato South District – Volta Region
- Adansi North District – Ashanti Region
- Abuakwa North District – Eastern Region
- Central Gonja District – Savannah Region
The letter further indicated that four schools in each district will participate in the exercise.
VVOB officials are expected to visit the respective districts to brief District Directors and relevant officers on the details of the trial testing. The scheduled meetings are as follows:
- Abuakwa North – May 13, 2026
- Afadjato South – May 15, 2026
- Shama – May 18, 2026
- Adansi North – May 19, 2026
- Central Gonja – May 21, 2026
The meetings are expected to last between one and two hours, preferably from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
GES has requested Regional Directors to ensure the participation of District Directors of Education, District Guidance and Counselling Coordinators, and District Girls’ Education Officers in the meetings.
The letter, signed by Munawaru Issahaque, Deputy Director-General (Q&A) for the Director-General of GES, also noted that transportation costs and lunch for participating regional officers would be reimbursed.
