GES Issues Directive to Curb Indiscipline and Crimes in Senior High Schools Following Tragic Incident

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a strong directive to all Regional Directors of Education to take immediate steps to curb student indiscipline and prevent crimes in schools.

This follows a tragic incident in one of the country’s Senior High Schools where a student reportedly shot a colleague, raising major concerns about safety and security on school campuses.

In a letter dated April 5, 2025, and signed by Mr. Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, the GES described the incident as disturbing and emphasized the urgent need for precautionary measures to prevent a recurrence.

All heads of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools have been instructed to implement the following safety measures:

  1. Conduct regular searches on students and their belongings.
  2. Increase security measures within school premises.
  3. Educate students on the dangers of carrying dangerous items to school.
  4. Encourage students to report any suspicious behaviour or items to school authorities.

“These measures are essential to prevent any potential harm to students and staff,” the directive stated.

Regional Directors have been tasked to communicate this directive to all relevant school heads and ensure its immediate implementation.

The Ghana Education Service believes that by adhering to these safety guidelines, schools across the country can remain secure learning environments for all students.

This development comes at a time when concerns over student violence and the smuggling of weapons and other dangerous items into schools are mounting.

The GES has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every school remains a safe space for learning and growth.
