GES Condemns Assault on Teachers at Bawku SHS, Launches Investigation

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly condemned the violent assault on two teachers and the destruction of property at Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region, describing the incident as unacceptable and a serious threat to discipline and safety within the education sector.

In a statement issued on June 17, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, GES management expressed deep concern over the attack, which was allegedly carried out by some students of the school.

According to the statement, preliminary reports link the unfortunate incident to the strict enforcement of examination regulations and invigilation procedures during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Service emphasized that the actions of the students are contrary to the core values of discipline, respect, and integrity that underpin education in Ghana.

“Management views attacks on teachers in the course of their official duties as a serious breach of school discipline and a threat to the safety of staff of the Service,” the statement noted.

The two affected teachers are currently receiving the necessary medical attention and support following the assault.

Meanwhile, GES has announced that a full-scale investigation is underway in collaboration with security agencies to identify all individuals involved in the incident. The Service warned that anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law in addition to disciplinary actions under GES regulations.

The Ghana Education Service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding teachers and maintaining a secure environment conducive to teaching, learning, and the successful conduct of national examinations.
