Four students and a teacher left with fatal injuries after a school building collapsed on them

Following the collapse of a school building, four basic school students, a teacher, and three community members are currently facing potentially fatal injuries. The Adeiso District Hospital in the Eastern Region is treating the injured people.

These eight victims were present at the Domeabra Zonal Inter School Sports competition, which was taking place in the Eastern Region’s Upper West Akim District. The athletic event was taking place at the Sukrung Awemfi D A primary grounds when heavy rain prompted them to take cover in a decaying school structure, according to John Priestly Badu, the vice chairman of the Domeabra Zonal.

The collapse happened at approximately 4:30 p.m. and involved three classrooms used by students in class one to three. Rescue operations were started right after by teachers and locals, and the injured were taken to the Adeiso Health Centre for emergency medical attention without delay.

John Priestly Badu was disappointed that not enough had been done to improve the state of the school, even after he wrote to the District Chief Executive (DCE) and the Member of Parliament (MP) several times.

“We have been conducting our sports activities this week, and when it started raining, they sought shelter in that dilapidated classroom. Unfortunately, it collapsed on them. We have made multiple appeals to the MP and DCE to fix the school, but we have not received a favorable response,” he stated.

The Gyasehene Edward Kotey and Mbrantihene Edem Atiemo are currently present at the Adeiso District Hospital, supporting the victims during this critical situation. As of the time of reporting at 6 pm on February 14, the individuals injured in the incident continue to receive care at the hospital.
