GES Releases Approved Study Leave With Pay Subject Areas and Application Guidelines for the 2026 Academic Year
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the approved subject areas for teachers and eligible staff seeking Study Leave With Pay for the 2026 academic year.
In a letter dated 20th July 2026 and referenced GES/HQ/SDTU/30/26, GES stated that the approved courses are intended to guide eligible staff applying for study leave while ensuring that critical manpower needs within the education sector are addressed.
According to the circular signed by Angela Frimpomaa Nkansah (Ms), Director, Human Resource Management Division (HRMD), for the Director-General, the approved programmes have been grouped into three categories with percentage allocations.
60% Allocation – Teaching Subjects
The largest allocation, representing 60%, has been reserved for teaching-related programmes. These include:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Animal Husbandry
- Crop Husbandry
- Mathematics
- Engineering
- Integrated Science
- General Agriculture
- English Language
- Physical Education
- French
- Ghanaian Language
- ICT (Information Technology)
- Special Education
- Computer Science
- Social Studies
- Guidance and Counselling
- Early Childhood
- Religious Studies
- Economics
- Government
- Geography
- History
- Music
- Career Technology
- Robotics and Coding
30% Allocation – Teaching and Non-Teaching Programmes
GES has allocated 30% of study leave opportunities to the following teaching and non-teaching disciplines:
- Visual Arts (including Graphic Design, Creative Arts, Leather Work, Sculpture, Clothing and Textiles, Ceramics, Painting, Basketry and Picture Making)
- Vocational Education (including Clothing and Textiles, Hospitality Management, Catering, Fashion and Design, Management in Living, Food and Nutrition, Home Economics, Fisheries, Jewellery and Beads Making)
- Technical Courses (including Technical Drawing, Electronics, Applied Electricity, Woodwork, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Welding, Metal Work, Building Construction, Auto Mechanics, Auto Works and Fabrication, Draughtsmanship, Creative Arts, Electrical Engineering, Plumbing and Gas Fitting, and Carpentry)
10% Allocation – Other Priority Areas
The remaining 10% allocation covers the following programmes:
- Librarianship
- Procurement, Purchasing, Supply and Logistics
- Secretarialship
- Business Administration
- Estate Management
- Laboratory Technician
- Accounting
How to Apply for GES Study Leave With Pay
GES has also outlined the application process for eligible staff seeking Study Leave With Pay for the 2026 academic year.
According to the guidelines:
- Applicants must obtain the official Study Leave With Pay application forms from their respective Metro, Municipal or District Education Offices.
- Completed application forms should be submitted in four (4) copies together with certified true copies of all relevant certificates.
- Applications must be submitted through the applicant’s Metro/Municipal/District Director or the Head of Institution (for Second Cycle institutions) before being forwarded to the Regional Director of Education.
- Regional and District Directors are required to ensure that the list of all fully qualified beneficiaries reaches the Director, Human Resource Management and Development (HRMD), GES Headquarters, on or before Friday, 30th October 2026.
Conditions and Requirements
GES noted that applicants must comply with all the stipulated conditions and eligibility requirements attached to the official circular before their applications can be considered.
The circular has been copied to the Deputy Directors-General of GES Headquarters, all Divisional Heads, all Regional Directors of Education, and General Managers of Educational Units for the necessary action.
