Education Minister Inaugurates 12-Member GES Council to Strengthen Pre-Tertiary Education Oversight

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated a 12-member governing council for the Ghana Education Service (GES) with a mandate to provide strategic leadership and oversight for the country’s pre-tertiary education sector.
The newly constituted council is chaired by Prof. Mawutor Avoke, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and includes representatives from key educational institutions, professional bodies, and stakeholder organizations.

In his address at the inauguration ceremony, Hon. Iddrisu emphasized the importance of a well-structured governance framework to ensure accountability, innovation, and improved learning outcomes across the basic and secondary education levels. He expressed confidence in the council’s capacity to guide GES toward the realization of its core objectives.
Membership of the GES Council
The council brings together a blend of academic, administrative, and professional expertise, comprising:
- Dr. Rosemond Wilson – Representative from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC)
- Prof. Azeko Tahiru Salifu – Representative from the National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA)
- Mr. Adam Adu Marshall – Representative from the National Teaching Council (NTC)
- Prof. Yayra Dzakadzie – Representative from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA)
- Rt. Rev. Paa Solomon Grant-Essilfie – Representative of Teacher Associations (on a rotational basis)
- Mrs. Mamle D. Andrews – Chief Director, Ministry of Education
- Mrs. Felicia Dapaah Agyeman-Boakye – Representative of Local Government
- A representative from Faith-Based Organizations in Ghana
- Adamu Bintu Fati – Representative of Non-Teaching Staff of GES
- Florence Bobi – Female Educationist
- Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis – Director-General, Ghana Education Service

The council’s responsibilities include advising on policy formulation, supporting implementation strategies, and ensuring that the objectives of GES align with national education goals.
Stakeholders have welcomed the inauguration as a positive step toward revitalizing Ghana’s education management structure, especially at a time when the sector faces evolving challenges requiring strong leadership and collaboration.
