Court Dismisses Case Involving Teacher Captured Assaulting Student in Viral Video
The Toase District Court has struck out the case involving a teacher and a student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School who were captured in a viral video engaging in a physical altercation on the school campus.
The incident, which generated widespread public outrage after footage of the confrontation circulated on social media, led to the arrest of the teacher, identified as Eric Buernortey Apaflo.
In the widely shared video, the teacher is seen repeatedly striking a female student before lifting and throwing her to the ground. The disturbing footage sparked intense public debate, with many calling for disciplinary and legal action against the teacher.
However, when the matter came before the Toase District Court, the court advised the teacher, the student, and their respective families to pursue an amicable resolution through reconciliation and an out-of-court settlement.
Following the court’s intervention, the case was subsequently struck out, paving the way for both parties to resolve their differences outside the courtroom.

Speaking to journalists after the court proceedings, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Professor Elvis Binney, appealed to members of the public to exercise restraint in their comments regarding the matter.
He specifically urged civil society organisations, education stakeholders, and members of the teaching fraternity to avoid making prejudicial remarks or issuing threats against the teacher while efforts are made to resolve the issue peacefully.
Professor Binney emphasized the importance of allowing due process and reconciliation efforts to take their course without external interference that could inflame tensions or prejudice public opinion.
The incident has reignited discussions about discipline, conflict resolution, and professional conduct within Ghana’s educational institutions, with many stakeholders calling for measures to prevent similar occurrences in schools across the country.
While the court’s decision marks a significant development in the case, public interest remains high as education authorities and stakeholders continue to monitor the situation and its implications for teacher-student relations in schools.
