Community of Domeabra Protest Closure of School by Paramount Chief
In a recent turn of events, the Domeabra community in Central Gonja District has voiced its opposition to the abrupt closure of their local school. The closure, ordered unilaterally by Mankpanwura Borenyi Achode I, the Paramount Chief of the Mankpan Traditional Area, has left many residents frustrated and concerned.
The chief’s decision, taken without consultation, aims to temporarily relocate health workers from the community clinic to the school’s teachers’ quarters due to clinic renovations. While the community supports the clinic’s improvement, it objects to compromising children’s education in the process.
Community Consultation and Rights Ignored
In a press statement, the Domeabra community expressed its dismay over the chief’s decision. They assert that the chief neglected to consult key stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and the education directorate. They argue that such decisions, affecting public welfare, must involve the community to ensure transparency and protect educational rights.

“Education is a fundamental right of every child, and to suspend it without alternatives disrupts their academic growth,” the statement reads. “We have offered solutions, including providing alternative accommodations for the health workers. It is baffling that a solution which could benefit both the school and clinic was dismissed.”
Appeal to Authorities for Intervention
In response, community leaders, including P.T.A. Chairman Nbonwura Abdul Razak and SMC Chairman Alhassan Abdul Rashid, have called on relevant authorities to intervene. They seek the support of the District Education Directorate, the Ministry of Education, civil society groups, and traditional governance bodies to rectify the situation. The statement emphasized that if the issue remains unresolved by Friday, October 25, 2024, the community would resort to further action to ensure the school reopens.
Conclusion
The Domeabra community stands firm in its commitment to both education and healthcare. They remain hopeful that dialogue will pave the way for a solution that honors the rights of their children without compromising community health services.
