Yagbonwura concurs with Speaker Bagbin’s stance on LGBTQI issues

Yagbonwura BII Kunto Jewu Soale, the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, has made an impassioned plea to the Ghanaian Parliament’s leaders to follow guidance on the LGBTQ problem and never introduce any unsettling phenomena into the nation’s social structure.

The king claims that the LGBTQ issue, which is now being debated in Ghana’s Parliament, is abhorrent and out of step with Ghanaian traditional customs.

He emphasized that if we remain silent and enable lawmakers to make such a decision to affirm LGBTQ people, our ancestors will never forgive us.

“I am confident that the LGBTQ+ bill will be unanimously rejected by Ghana’s 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.”

As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of Parliament, the Speaker of Parliament paid the King a courtesy visit at his private residence in Damongo.

Speaker Alban Sumana Bagbin responded to the Yagbonwura’s call by making it clear where he stands on the LGBTQ law.

“I have said it before and I’ll say it again: I’d sooner die than let the LGBTQ+ bill pass while I’m still alive, even though I’m not allowed to vote.

“I run the House and I can assure you and the good people of Ghana that the LGBTQ+ bill will never be approved to be in Ghana,” the speaker of the House said.

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs is currently examining the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021, also known as the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.

The measure aims to protect Ghanaian family values and human sexual rights while outlawing the activities of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people, and other queer people there.

If the bill is passed into law, a person who is found guilty might be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
