WhatsApp to enable contact tagging in status updates
WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a new feature enabling users to mention contacts in their status updates, bringing the app closer in functionality to Instagram stories.
The feature, now accessible to select users through the latest WhatsApp beta update for Android (version 2.24.20.3), is currently undergoing public testing following months of development.
This new functionality allows users to tag specific contacts in their status updates, notifying those mentioned directly. It aims to simplify engagement by connecting users more easily through status updates.

To tag a contact, a button will appear in the caption bar when sharing photos and videos in the status.
Tagged contacts will receive a private notification, and other viewers of the status won’t be able to see who was mentioned. Additionally, tagged contacts can reshare the status update with their own audience using a new reshare button, but the identity of the original creator will stay concealed.
The addition of tagging in WhatsApp status updates aligns it with similar features found on Meta’s other platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, improving user engagement on the app.
