University Senior Staff to begin nationwide strike due to unresolved demands

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) has declared a nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Monday, September 16, 2024. In a letter signed by George Ansong, the National Chairman of SSA-UoG, the association outlined its reasons for the industrial action, primarily citing the government’s failure to meet their demands despite ongoing negotiations.

The key issues raised by the association include:

  1. The government’s inability to pay the new rates of the Vehicle Maintenance and related allowances, even though an agreement has been reached.
  2. Failure to release the Tier Two pension deductions to Fund Managers since January 2023.
  3. The government’s failure to recalculate the interest on their Tier Two pensions from 2010 to 2016.

The association emphasized that the strike has become necessary as a result of the government’s failure to meet the agreed deadline of September 10, 2024, for resolving these outstanding issues.

SSA-UoG has directed all members across various university campuses to strictly comply with the strike directive as they push for their demands to be met.

This strike is expected to disrupt administrative and essential services in public universities across Ghana. The government has not yet responded to the impending strike, raising concerns about the potential impact on university operations.

The strike announcement comes at a crucial time for universities, adding to concerns over ongoing labor disputes in the public sector. Many are waiting to see if the government will take action before the strike commences.
