Trained Teacher Abandons National Service Post After Discovering Dilapidated School Structure

A trained teacher from Offinso College of Education has reportedly abandoned his post after being assigned to a village school in the Kwahu area of the Eastern Region for his mandatory one-year national service.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the teacher, whose name has been withheld, was shocked to discover that the entire school operated from a severely dilapidated two-classroom structure.

The building, described as unfit for academic purposes, lacked basic infrastructure, with broken windows, leaky roofing, and no furniture for both students and teachers.

The young teacher is said to have reported to the school briefly but decided to leave after assessing the deplorable condition of the learning environment. Community members say the school has long suffered neglect, with successive appeals to authorities for renovation and support yielding no results.

“This is not a place to even call a school,” one community member lamented. “We’ve pleaded for years, but no one seems to care.”

The incident raises pressing concerns about the state of rural education in Ghana and the challenges facing newly posted teachers, particularly those on national service who often find themselves in under-resourced communities.

Teacher unions and educational stakeholders have frequently called for improved infrastructure and support systems to motivate teachers to accept postings in rural areas.

Meanwhile, education authorities in the district have yet to comment on the development or provide information on steps being taken to address the infrastructure concerns.

This incident adds to the growing call for a national conversation on equitable distribution of educational resources and the urgent need to improve conditions in underserved schools across the country.
