Tragic Incident in Kadjebi: Two Teenagers Killed by Immigration Vehicle, Community Reacts
A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on Wednesday evening in Okanta, a suburb of Kadjebi in the Oti Region, when an Immigration Authority vehicle allegedly crushed two teenagers to death. The vehicle, with registration number GI 441, was assigned to the Menuso border and is said to have been driven by the immigration commander of the border post.
The victims, identified as a motor mechanic apprentice and a makeup artist apprentice, were on their way home from work when the fatal accident occurred. Reports indicate that the immigration vehicle attempted to overtake another car but swerved into the lane where the two teenagers were riding, causing a devastating collision.
Upon receiving news of the accident, police officers and immigration personnel arrived at the scene. However, their presence sparked outrage among local residents, who expressed their frustration with the incident. In a show of anger, the community set fire to the immigration vehicle, demanding justice for the loss of the young lives.

The response to the fire was delayed as firefighters were unable to put out the blaze. Unfortunately, the region’s fire truck had been out of service for several months, leaving the fire uncontrollable for a time.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the bodies of the two teenagers were transported to a nearby hospital for preservation. The community, reeling from the shock of the loss, has made arrangements for their burial on Thursday, December 12, 2024. The young apprentices will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
The incident has left the residents of Okanta and the wider Kadjebi area grieving, with many calling for accountability and improved safety measures on the roads. The tragedy has also raised questions about the preparedness of local authorities and emergency services to respond to such incidents.
