Odorgonno SHS Students Demonstrate Over Malfunctioning Traffic Light After Fatal Accident

Students of Odorgonno Senior High School (SHS) took to the streets this morning, blocking the main Awoshie-Anyaa road in protest against a malfunctioning traffic light in front of their school.

The demonstration follows growing concerns over frequent traffic congestion and accidents caused by the faulty signal.

The protest was triggered by a tragic incident last Thursday when a young security guard at the school was fatally struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road.

This unfortunate accident has heightened frustrations among students and staff, who have long complained about the danger posed by the non-functional traffic light.

Chanting slogans and holding placards, the students called on authorities to take immediate action to repair the traffic light to prevent further loss of lives. Their demonstration led to heavy traffic on the Awoshie-Anyaa road, drawing the attention of motorists and passersby.

Some students expressed their anger over the perceived neglect by city authorities. “We have been dealing with this faulty traffic light for too long. Every day, crossing the road is a risk. How many more lives must be lost before something is done?” one student lamented.

The incident has reignited discussions about road safety around schools, particularly those located along major highways.

Many stakeholders, including parents and teachers, are calling on the Department of Urban Roads and the relevant authorities to prioritize fixing the traffic light and implementing additional safety measures, such as pedestrian crossings and speed ramps.

At the time of reporting, police officers had arrived at the scene to restore order and engage with the protesting students. Meanwhile, school authorities are expected to meet with city officials to push for a lasting solution.

The students have vowed to continue their advocacy until the faulty traffic light is fixed, emphasizing that their demonstration is a call for action to prevent another tragic loss.
