Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh Steps Down as GES Deputy Director-General After Over Six Years of Service

After more than six and a half years of dedicated service, Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh is set to step aside as Deputy Director-General (Quality and Access) of the Ghana Education Service (GES), effective February 21, 2025.

During his tenure, Dr. Tandoh played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of teaching and learning, expanding educational access, and ensuring Ghanaian students benefit from a more robust education system.

Reporting directly to the Director-General, he supervised four key divisions within the GES, ensuring alignment with the Education Strategic Plan (ESP 2018-2030). His responsibilities spanned research, assessment, monitoring, and evaluation—key components of educational advancement.

Key Achievements

Dr. Tandoh’s tenure saw several groundbreaking initiatives, including:

1. Double Track System

As the Chief Technical Officer, he was instrumental in the conceptualization, development, and design of the Double Track System for Senior High Schools (SHS), a crucial element of the Free Senior High School Policy. He also oversaw its implementation within the GES.

2. Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP)

Dr. Tandoh led the design and implementation of the $218.7 million Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP), aimed at improving learning outcomes. He was part of the Ghanaian delegation that successfully negotiated the project at the World Bank Head Office in Washington, D.C.

3. Global Partnership for Education (GPE) COVID-19 Accelerated Funding

He spearheaded the conceptualization and execution of the GPE COVID-19 Accelerated Funding initiative, which strengthened Ghana’s education system during the pandemic.

4. Education in Emergency Policy

Under his leadership, Ghana developed its Education in Emergency Policy, ensuring resilience in the face of crises.

5. SHS Core Subject Teacher Training

Dr. Tandoh played a key role in designing training content for Senior High School Core Subject Teachers to enhance instructional effectiveness.

6. GES PLC App

He drove the development and deployment of the GES Professional Learning Community (PLC) App, a digital tool to support teachers’ professional development.

7. Curriculum Reform

Dr. Tandoh led the implementation of both the Standard-Based Curriculum and the Common Core Curriculum, key reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes across all levels of education.

Reflecting on his tenure, Dr. Tandoh remarked, “It has been an honor to contribute to the advancement of education in Ghana. I am particularly proud of the work we have done to expand access and improve quality, and I am confident that the GES will continue to build on these achievements.”
