Violence Mars Peace Ceremony Between Bawku SHS and Bawku Technical Institute

A peace ceremony meant to foster reconciliation between students of Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute took a violent turn on Tuesday, February 25, leaving at least five students with severe injuries and several others with minor wounds.

The event, held at Bawku Technical Institute, was organized by school authorities in collaboration with traditional rulers from Kpalwega to end persistent clashes between the two schools. As part of the reconciliation efforts, the traditional leaders introduced the burial of the okra stick, a symbolic ritual meant to seal peace between the two factions.

However, tensions flared during the ceremony, leading to a chaotic scene as students from both institutions began pelting stones at each other. The sudden outbreak of violence disrupted the event, causing injuries and panic among attendees.

The Bawku Divisional Police Command quickly intervened to restore calm, while the injured students were transported to Quality and Vineyard hospitals in Bawku for medical attention.

Despite the disturbances, school authorities and the Ghana Education Service (GES) managed to proceed with the peace ritual. Senior prefects from both schools participated in the symbolic burial of the okra stick, signifying their commitment to ending hostilities.

The incident underscores the deep-seated tensions between the two schools, raising concerns about the sustainability of peace efforts. Authorities are expected to engage further with students and stakeholders to prevent future clashes and ensure long-lasting harmony.
