Minister for Education Endorses Locally Manufactured Science Set to Transform Science Education in Ghana

In a significant move to revolutionize science education in Ghana, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has endorsed the Science Set, a locally manufactured innovation designed to provide hands-on science learning opportunities to students, especially those in resource-limited schools. Developed by Dext Technology Limited, this compact, desk-sized laboratory aims to address long-standing challenges in science education and is poised to make a substantial impact on the educational landscape of Ghana.

The Science Set, which has already been integrated into over 400 private schools in Ghana and is now also adopted by 500 schools in the United Kingdom, is being hailed as a “paradigm shift” by Mr. Iddrisu. Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the budget estimates for the Ministry of Education, the Minister emphasized the potential of this innovation to bridge the gap in science education and equip students with critical Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills.

“For years, the lack of adequate science resources has hindered quality education, particularly in rural areas,” Mr. Iddrisu stated. “The Science Set provides an affordable and effective solution, ensuring that every child, regardless of their location, has access to hands-on science learning.” This initiative, according to the Minister, could prove to be a game-changer for Ghana’s education system, particularly in areas where access to traditional science labs and equipment has been limited.

Manufactured in Kumasi, the Science Set aligns with Ghana’s Standards-Based Curriculum, which ensures that students can perform all the required science experiments efficiently and at a fraction of the cost of traditional laboratory setups. Its affordability and practicality make it an attractive solution for schools across the country, particularly in remote and underfunded regions.

Beyond its educational impact, the Science Set holds the potential for significant economic benefits. Mr. Iddrisu highlighted that scaling the initiative nationwide could create thousands of jobs in various sectors, including manufacturing, distribution, and teacher training. “This is a national opportunity,” he declared, stressing that the widespread implementation of the Science Set could position Ghana as a leader in STEM education across Africa and even create avenues for exporting the innovation to other countries.

He further explained that investment in STEM education is crucial for the country’s future development, and the Science Set presents a sustainable model to address the current gaps in education while also contributing to economic growth. The project, which is expected to receive support from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND), will be rolled out to schools by the next academic year, with the primary focus on students in Primary 4-6.

The Ministry’s ambitious plan includes distributing the Science Set to schools nationwide, making science education more accessible and practical for students across the country. This initiative not only promises to enhance learning experiences but also aims to foster a new generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators who can contribute to the nation’s development.

In conclusion, the Science Set represents more than just an educational tool—it symbolizes a forward-thinking approach to addressing the challenges facing science education in Ghana. As the Ministry of Education moves forward with this project, it is hoped that it will not only enhance the quality of STEM education but also drive the nation’s progress toward a more prosperous and innovative future.
