GNAT has advised its members to withdraw their services if they feel threatened at school

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has expressed deep concern over what it calls the “worrying silence” of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and regional directors in the face of increasing attacks on teachers across the country.
Incidents of violence against teachers are on the rise, sparking alarm within the education sector. In several cases, teachers have faced not only verbal threats but also physical assault — from both students and members of surrounding communities — putting their safety and lives at serious risk.
Recent reports highlight a disturbing trend. In the Ashanti Region, a teacher in Offinso was reportedly stabbed by a student. In the Greater Accra Region, students of Accra High Senior High School were involved in a violent altercation with a teacher. These are just a few examples fueling growing frustration among educators.
General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Tanko Musah, strongly criticised the GES for its silence and lack of action. Speaking in an interview with 3news, he warned of potential consequences if the issue continues to be ignored.

“We are waiting for a day that there will be an explosion in one particular school. Let us hear somebody in this country that will blame a teacher — that particular person, that day we will descend into the gutters with that person,” he stated emphatically.
Musah further called on teachers to prioritise their safety above all else. He advised that if any teacher feels unsafe at their school, they should not hesitate to leave the premises and report the situation.
“We are telling our teachers: when you go to school and you feel threatened, tell your head and withdraw your service. Period. Nobody can do you anything,” he declared.
GNAT’s statement underscores the urgent need for the Ghana Education Service and other authorities to address the issue with seriousness and speed. The association is calling for immediate measures to ensure the safety and protection of teachers — not only to uphold their rights, but also to preserve the integrity and stability of the educational system.
