Ghanaian Lady Overcomes Discrimination at KNUST to Pursue PhD with GNPC Scholarship

Rosa Monique, a Ghanaian woman living with systemic scleroderma—a rare chronic condition affecting the skin, joints, and internal organs—has opened up about her experience of being denied a PhD scholarship by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) due to her health condition.

Despite the setback, Rosa’s resilience and determination have inspired many, as she eventually secured funding through the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) scholarship program.

Rosa recounted applying for a PhD program at KNUST in 2020, where she was shortlisted for a scholarship and invited to attend an interview. Although she performed exceptionally well during the interview, she was met with disheartening remarks from the panel’s chairperson.

According to Rosa, the chair openly stated that her health condition would hinder her ability to complete the PhD program, dismissing her capabilities based on her medical status rather than her academic potential.

Refusing to be deterred by the discriminatory treatment, Rosa sought alternative opportunities. Her efforts bore fruit when she applied for the GNPC scholarship.

Unlike her experience at KNUST, she was met with understanding and support, which led to her being awarded the scholarship and securing funding to pursue her PhD.

In sharing her story, Rosa called on leaders in academia and other institutions to eschew discriminatory practices against individuals with medical conditions or disabilities. She emphasized the need for compassion, encouragement, and equal opportunities for all, irrespective of their health challenges.

“Stop discriminating against people with medical conditions or disabilities. Refrain from making hurtful comments and instead encourage them to pursue their dreams,” Rosa urged.

Her story has sparked conversations about the treatment of individuals with disabilities and chronic illnesses in Ghana, particularly within academic institutions. Many have lauded her resilience and called for systemic changes to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities for all.

Rosa’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that health challenges do not define a person’s capabilities. Her perseverance and success underscore the importance of fostering inclusive environments that empower individuals to achieve their full potential.
