KNUST Mourns Tragic Loss of Student Afia Dedaa Osae-Atuah

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is in mourning following the tragic death of third-year Geography student, Afia Dedaa Osae-Atuah. The young student was fatally struck by a ‘trotro’ bus while standing on the shoulder of the road on her way to have her laptop repaired. The vehicle, reportedly suffering from brake failure, swerved off its lane before hitting her.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed through an announcement on the university’s official page, leaving the entire KNUST community in deep shock. The loss of Afia, who was known for her academic diligence and vibrant personality, has sparked an outpouring of grief and sympathy. University officials, faculty members, and students have all expressed their condolences to her bereaved family, offering prayers and support during this difficult time.

Afia’s untimely death has underscored the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, particularly in the areas surrounding the university. Her passing adds to the growing concern over reckless driving in the vicinity, with many students calling for stricter regulations and greater enforcement of road safety protocols.

This tragic incident comes amidst a worrying trend of road accidents involving students, with over 10 lives lost this year alone, including three fatal car accidents across different locations.

The KNUST student body is now rallying for action to prevent such incidents in the future. Advocacy for better traffic control, routine vehicle checks, and a heightened awareness of road safety have been some of the key calls from the student community, which is determined to ensure that Afia’s death is not in vain. As the university grapples with this loss, students and faculty alike are hoping that these discussions will lead to tangible changes that can help protect future generations of students.

Afia’s memory will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew her. In her honor, KNUST has promised to continue pushing for greater safety reforms, ensuring that no other student faces the same tragic fate.
