Ghana to Provide Free Dialysis Treatment for Kidney Patients Under NHIS Starting December 1, 2024
Effective December 1, 2024, all kidney patients in Ghana will receive free dialysis treatment under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This bold move is set to significantly alleviate the financial burden on patients and their families, who often struggle with the high cost of life-saving dialysis procedures.
Dr. Bawumia made the announcement during a stakeholder meeting in the Old Tafo Pankrono Constituency of the Ashanti Region as part of his 15-day tour leading up to the December 7 elections.
A New Era for Kidney Patients
The announcement comes as a major relief for the thousands of Ghanaians suffering from chronic kidney disease, a condition that requires regular dialysis to keep patients alive. Traditionally, the procedure has been prohibitively expensive, placing an immense financial strain on many families.
“We recognize that dialysis has become increasingly expensive, and many patients have struggled to afford it,” Dr. Bawumia said. “That is why we have made the decision to extend the coverage of the NHIS to include free dialysis treatment for all kidney patients, starting December 1. This policy aims to reduce the financial burden on families and ensure that no one is left behind in accessing essential medical care.”
The new policy builds on the success of a pilot program launched earlier this year, which provided free dialysis for specific groups—patients over 60 and those under 18 years old. According to Dr. Bawumia, the pilot program has been successful, and with its conclusion, the government is now expanding the coverage to include all kidney patients, regardless of age.
Revitalizing the NHIS
Dr. Bawumia also addressed the earlier challenges faced by the NHIS, noting that the system had been struggling financially before the current administration took office. He highlighted that the government has made significant investments to revive and strengthen the NHIS, ensuring its sustainability and ability to cover more treatments, including childhood cancer, sickle cell disease, and now dialysis.
“The NHIS was collapsing when we took over, but we have revived it with a huge investment. We have expanded coverage to include treatments for childhood cancer and sickle cell disease, and now kidney dialysis,” Dr. Bawumia explained.
This expansion reflects the government’s broader commitment to improving healthcare access and reducing the financial barriers that prevent many Ghanaians from receiving the care they need.

A Lifeline for Families
Dialysis, a vital treatment for patients with kidney failure, is often required multiple times a week, making the cost of treatment a heavy burden on families. In Ghana, where many people live on limited incomes, the cost of dialysis has often meant that only a few could afford it, leaving others with no choice but to forgo life-saving treatment.
The new policy to provide free dialysis treatment under the NHIS aims to address this gap by ensuring that all registered kidney patients, regardless of age or financial status, will receive the treatment they need without the additional financial strain. This intervention is expected to improve the quality of life for kidney patients across the country.
“Dialysis is expensive, and this new policy will help reduce the burden on families,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized. “Our goal is to ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of their financial status, can access quality healthcare services.”
A Step Toward Universal Healthcare
The introduction of free dialysis treatment is part of a broader strategy by the NPP government to expand access to healthcare services and improve the overall health system in Ghana. With the addition of dialysis, childhood cancer, and sickle cell disease to the NHIS, the government is working to make the system more comprehensive and accessible to all Ghanaians.
As Dr. Bawumia continues his campaign ahead of the December elections, the announcement of free dialysis treatment is expected to be a key point in his platform, showcasing the government’s efforts to improve healthcare and make it more equitable for all citizens.
The introduction of free dialysis treatment marks a significant milestone for the NHIS and for the health sector in Ghana. With this new policy, the government is not only making strides in improving access to life-saving treatments but is also reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that all Ghanaians have access to affordable, quality healthcare.
For kidney patients and their families, the upcoming change represents a new hope—a chance to receive the medical care they need without the added financial strain. The announcement has already been met with widespread praise from the public, with many expressing relief and gratitude for the government’s initiative.
As Ghana moves toward December 1, 2024, the implementation of free dialysis under the NHIS will undoubtedly be seen as one of the key achievements in the country’s healthcare transformation.
