GES Revokes Appointments and Recruitments of Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a directive revoking the appointments and recruitments of all teaching and non-teaching staff who have not yet been placed on the government payroll.

This decision, communicated in a letter dated February 17, 2025, follows a directive from the Office of the President.

According to the letter, signed by the Acting Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, all recruitments of personnel who are yet to be captured on the payroll have been revoked with immediate effect.

The directive applies to all levels of GES administration, including Regional, District, Municipal, and Metropolitan Education Directors, who have been instructed to enforce the revocation strictly.

The revocation is in line with the Chief of Staff’s directive, signaling a possible effort to control the wage bill, ensure proper vetting of appointments, or address irregularities in recruitment.

The letter does not specify the reasons behind the revocation but indicates that further directives will be issued when necessary.

This move is likely to affect many newly recruited teachers and staff who have not yet received financial clearance for their appointments.

It raises concerns about employment security for affected personnel and may spark reactions from teacher unions and other stakeholders in the education sector.

The GES has assured that relevant authorities, including the Minister of Education, the Deputy Minister of Education, and other key officials, have been copied in the communication, implying that further discussions and clarifications may follow.

Education sector stakeholders and affected individuals will be looking forward to additional guidance on the way forward regarding this major decision.
