GES Opens Applications for School-Based Counsellors in SHS/STHS/STEM Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a new initiative aimed at enhancing student support within Senior High Schools (SHS), Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS), and STEM institutions across Ghana.

The program, as outlined in a recent circular, is part of the restructured Guidance and Counselling Framework, which seeks to appoint full-time, school-based counsellors to provide comprehensive mental health and career support to students.

Key Responsibilities of the School-Based Counsellors

Selected counsellors will be tasked with an array of duties aimed at fostering students’ mental, emotional, and academic well-being. Some of the primary responsibilities include:

  1. Individual and Group Counselling – Providing personalized and group counselling sessions to support students’ emotional health.
  2. Implementing School-Based Programs – Developing and implementing counselling programs tailored to the needs of each school.
  3. Parental and Teacher Collaboration – Working closely with parents and teachers to create a supportive environment for students.
  4. Ethical Standards and Confidentiality – Upholding strict confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards in handling sensitive student information.
  5. Record Keeping – Documenting and securely storing all relevant records related to counselling sessions.
  6. Reporting and Intervention – Assisting students in reporting incidents when necessary and ensuring Safe School interventions are implemented.
  7. Career Guidance and Development – Assisting students with subject selection and career path development, including guidance for tertiary education.
  8. Psychological and Psychometric Support – Offering psychological assistance and psychometric assessments to the school community when required.

Qualifications and Experience

GES is looking for qualified candidates within its teaching staff who meet the following criteria:

A Bachelor’s degree with a major in Guidance and Counselling or Psychology, alongside a second teaching subject for Senior High Schools.

A Master’s degree in Counselling or a related field is advantageous.

Relevant experience in school counselling.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for documentation and reporting purposes.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills essential for effective counselling.

Application Process

Interested and qualified teaching staff are to submit an application letter, a Curriculum Vitae, and a confidential report from their Head of Institution. Applications should be addressed to the Acting Director of HRMD at GES Headquarters, and the deadline for submissions is November 11, 2024.
