GES interdicts Benkum SHS Head Teacher on charges of séxual abuse of 15 students

Following charges of sexual misconduct, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has taken action against Emmanuel Nyarko, the head teacher of Benkum Senior High School (SHS) in the Eastern Region. In the meantime, investigations into Mr. Nyarko’s alleged relationships with around 15 female students at the institution are ongoing.

According to information that has come to light, other professors at the institution who were reportedly committing acts of misbehavior similar to Mr. Nyarko’s mentioned his actions when attempting to secure their transfers to other institutions. The incident happened in 2022, and an investigation has been ongoing ever since.

Yaw Opoku Mensah, the deputy spokesperson for the education ministry, stated that the regional education council is in charge of the probe in an interview with Citi FM.

He stressed that the Ministry is closely watching how the investigation is going and that the school has helped by making it possible for the committee to function in a way that adheres to the GES code of conduct.

Mensah advised the general population to maintain their composure and help with the investigation. He declared that the findings of the inquiries would be communicated to the GES headquarters for further action.

“The investigation has begun, the regional education organization is in charge, and the school has prepared the ground for investigations to begin for the headmaster to grant the space or step aside so that the committee can have the atmosphere to carry out the investigations in accordance with the code of conduct of GES,” Mr. Mensah said.

“The Ministry is keeping an eye on the situation, and we ask the public to maintain their composure and support the investigation. The GES at headquarters will eventually receive a report on the findings of the investigations so that further action can be taken.
