Education Ministry clarifies reporting date for SHS 1 students
The Education Ministry is reassuring parents and students as Senior High School (SHS) freshers gear up for the upcoming academic year. Amid concerns regarding readiness, Ministry spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng clarified in a recent interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem that academic activities will officially commence on November 7, contrary to earlier reports suggesting a start date of October 30.
Addressing the anxiety surrounding the transition to SHS, Mr. Kwarteng emphasized that prospective students have a one-week grace period to facilitate a smoother adjustment. This transition period is designed to alleviate the pressures on both students and their families, allowing for adequate preparation before classes begin.
One of the key changes aimed at easing this process is the introduction of the harmonized prospectus. This initiative has significantly reduced the burden on parents and students by eliminating the need for multiple trips to schools to acquire essential items. With the new system in place, families can purchase necessary supplies more conveniently, streamlining preparations for the school year.

“It’s important to note that we never stated students should report to school on October 30,” Kwarteng clarified. “What begins on that date is registration and orientation, which is distinct from the start of academic activities. The actual academic year starts on November 7. This distinction is crucial for parents and students, especially since many have expressed concerns about the timeline.”
Kwarteng also highlighted that the registration process offers flexibility; students are not required to be physically present at school on October 30. Instead, they have the option to register online, further easing the transition and ensuring that all students can prepare adequately for their new academic environment.
As the start date approaches, the Ministry encourages parents and students to remain calm and well-informed, assuring them that the necessary measures are in place for a successful academic year ahead.
