Disturbing Video of Basic School Student Smoking in Class Sparks Public Outrage

A disturbing video circulating on social media has triggered widespread outrage across Ghana, showing a basic school student openly smoking what appears to be a rolled substance while seated in a classroom.
The footage, which has since gone viral, captures the young boy calmly puffing on the item without any visible adult supervision or intervention. The exact location and school where the incident occurred have not yet been verified, but the disturbing nature of the act has drawn swift condemnation from parents, educators, child protection advocates, and the general public.
Many Ghanaians are calling for an urgent investigation by the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Police Service, and relevant child welfare institutions to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure that those responsible—whether by negligence or otherwise—are held accountable.
“It is heartbreaking to see a child engaging in such behaviour right in the classroom where he should be learning,” said a concerned parent in Accra. “This raises serious questions about supervision, parenting, and the environment in which our children are being raised.”

Some commentators have expressed concern over the increasing exposure of children to harmful substances and the apparent erosion of discipline within some schools. Others have highlighted the need for strengthened guidance and counselling units in basic schools, especially in underserved areas, where peer pressure and social media influence are reportedly taking a growing toll on young minds.
Education analysts and social workers have also called on government agencies to step up campaigns on substance abuse, targeting both students and their guardians. They say proactive educational outreach and intervention programmes are critical to preventing similar incidents in the future.
The Ghana Education Service is yet to officially comment on the viral footage. However, education stakeholders are urging the GES to move swiftly in identifying the student and the school involved, and to roll out remedial measures that include psychosocial support for the student, disciplinary review, and enhanced classroom monitoring mechanisms.
As the video continues to generate strong reactions online and offline, many are seeing it as a wake-up call for society to pay closer attention to the behavioural development of children and the environments in which they are nurtured.
