Breakdown of CPD Allowance to be Paid to Teachers this Year
In an effort to enhance the quality of education in Ghana, the government has introduced the Continuous Professional Development Allowance (CPDA) for both professional and non-professional teachers. This allowance is designed to support teachers in their ongoing professional development, ensuring they remain updated with the latest teaching methods and educational advancements.
Eligibility Criteria
The CPDA is available to all teachers under the Ghana Education Service (GES), regardless of their professional status. Both professional and non-professional teachers are eligible to receive this allowance, reflecting the government’s commitment to fostering growth and development across the entire teaching workforce.
Breakdown of the Allowance
The CPDA is structured as follows:
- Professional Teachers: Each professional teacher will receive a total allowance of GHS 2,400.
- Non-Professional Teachers: Non-professional teachers will receive a total of GHS 1,800.
These allowances have been carefully calculated to support the continuous development of teachers, taking into consideration the different levels of professional training and experience.
Deductions and Purpose
To ensure that the CPDA is used effectively, certain deductions will be made from the total allowance:

- Continuous Professional Development: GHS 200 will be deducted annually from the allowance of each teacher. This deduction is intended to cover the cost of professional development programs, workshops, and courses that teachers are required to attend.
- License Renewal: A further GHS 100 will be deducted at source for the renewal of professional licenses. This deduction is particularly relevant for professional teachers who must renew their licenses regularly to continue practicing in the profession.
These deductions are aimed at reinforcing the importance of continuous learning and adherence to professional standards within the teaching profession.
Payment Schedule
The CPDA will be disbursed in two installments over a 3-month period:
- The first installment will be paid in September 2024 (GHC 2100).
- The second installment is scheduled for November 2024 (800).
- From next year going, the CPDA will be paid in only November.
This staggered payment approach is intended to provide teachers with financial support over an extended period, helping them to manage their professional development activities effectively.
Conclusion
The introduction of the CPDA marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to improve the quality of education in Ghana. By investing in the continuous professional development of teachers, the government is not only enhancing the skills and knowledge of teachers but also ensuring that students receive the best possible education. As the first installment of the CPDA approaches, teachers are encouraged to take full advantage of the opportunities it provides to grow and excel in their profession.
