Zuarungu Senior High School (SHS) in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region has been closed down indefinitely following violent clashes between rival student groups on Sunday, July 20.

The shutdown order was issued by the Upper East Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Mr. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, as part of measures to prevent the violence from escalating further.

According to preliminary reports, the disturbances were sparked by the alleged theft of a mobile phone. What began as a minor altercation quickly spiraled into a large-scale brawl involving multiple students, resulting in chaos on the school compound.

The clash led to extensive destruction of property, including the burning of some school facilities. Security sources confirmed that four students were arrested in connection with the incident. However, in a shocking development, one of the suspects managed to escape while being transported to the police station. During the escape, the student reportedly absconded with a police officer’s magazine, prompting an immediate and intense manhunt.

In response to the violent outbreak and mounting security concerns, a joint police and military task force has been deployed to the school. Their primary responsibility is to ensure the safe evacuation of students, especially those from conflict-prone areas such as Bawku, to avoid potential reprisal attacks.

Authorities have assured the public that these transfers are strictly precautionary and part of a broader effort to restore calm on the school premises. The Regional Security Council has also appealed to students, parents, teachers, and local leaders to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigations and peacekeeping operations.
