YouTube is developing new tools to safeguard creators from imitation by AI

YouTube is creating new tools to give creators better control over content that mimics their voice or appearance through generative AI. In its announcement, YouTube stated that these tools are designed to protect creators and partners while allowing them to “leverage AI’s creative potential” in a responsible manner.

The first tool, called “synthetic-singing identification technology,” will enable artists and creators to automatically detect and manage content on YouTube that replicates their singing voices using generative AI. This tool will be integrated into YouTube’s existing Content ID system and is set to be tested in a pilot program next year.

This development follows YouTube’s commitment last November to offer music labels a way to remove AI-generated clones of artists. The rise of generative AI music tools has raised concerns among artists about plagiarism, copycatting, and copyright infringement. Earlier this year, over 200 artists, including Billie Eilish, Pearl Jam, and Katy Perry, issued an open letter criticizing unauthorized AI-generated mimicry as a threat to human creativity and called for more responsible AI development to protect performers’ livelihoods.

A separate tool is also in the works that can identify facial deepfakes of creators, actors, musicians, and athletes on the platform. The system is still in active development, and YouTube hasn’t indicated when it’s expected to roll out.

YouTube is also vowing to take action against those who scrape the platform to develop AI tools. The platform emphasized that unauthorized access to creator content breaches its Terms of Service. Despite this, companies such as OpenAI, Apple, Anthropic, Nvidia, Salesforce, and Runway AI have used thousands of scraped YouTube videos to train their AI systems. YouTube’s measures to combat this include blocking scrapers from accessing the site and investing in detection systems.

YouTube stated that as AI progresses, it should enhance rather than replace human creativity. The company is dedicated to collaborating with its partners to ensure that future AI developments support and amplify creators’ voices. Additionally, YouTube is working on providing creators with more control over how third-party AI companies use their content on the platform and will release more information later this year.
