WAEC New Regulations: Illegal Items that are Not Allowed in the Exam Room Beginning in 2023 BECE and WASSCE

Some items that candidates cannot bring into the exam room for the WASSCE and BECE in 2023 have been listed by the West African Examinations Council(WAEC).

The prohibited items for the WASSCE and BECE exams as well as the associated penalties are listed below:

1. The following will take place if a candidate is discovered in the examination room with a blank sheet of paper, cribs, notes, textbooks, prepared material, or any other printed material (apart from a mobile phone or any other electronic communication device):

  • When it is established or there is proof that a candidate has engaged in examination malpractice in just one subject, the results for that subject must be withheld pending the conclusion of an investigation by the relevant Council Committee.
  • The candidate’s complete results must be delayed pending the outcome of an investigation by the relevant Council Committee if it cannot be promptly confirmed or there is no evidence to support the claim that the applicant engaged in examination misconduct in only one topic.

2. If a candidate is discovered using a programmed calculator in the exam room, the full set of results will be withheld pending the outcome of an investigation by the relevant Council Committee.

3. If a candidate is discovered to have inscriptions on any part of his or her body or clothing while taking the exam, the results of the entire examination will be withheld pending the outcome of an investigation by the relevant Council Committee.

4. If a candidate is discovered in the examination room in possession of a mobile phone or any other electronic communication device, the whole results of the candidate will be withheld pending the outcome of an investigation by the relevant Council Committee.

Additional Laws and Regulations

1. When a candidate is arrested for an offence (or offences) like those listed below within or outside the testing facility, the candidate’s complete results must be withheld pending the conclusion of an investigation by the relevant Council Committee:

  • Stealing, converting or misappropriating the scripts of other candidates.
  • Substituting worked scripts during or after the examination.
  • Submission of more than one worked script.
  • Possession of more than one question paper or answer booklet.
  • Seeking or receiving help from non-candidate(s) such as invigilator(s), supervisor(s), teacher(s) or other personalities before, during or after the examination.

2. If the person providing the assistance is a prospective candidate and not a candidate for the examination in session, he or she will be prohibited from taking any examinations offered by the Council for a period of one year and will also be reported to the relevant authority for disciplinary action to be taken against him or her. In addition to the aforementioned measure, the complete results of the candidate will be withheld pending the conclusion of an investigation by the relevant Council Committee.

3. If a candidate is arrested for one or more of the following offences inside or outside the testing facility, all of the candidate’s results must be withheld pending the conclusion of an investigation by the relevant Council Committee:

  • Tearing part of the question paper or answer booklet during the examination.
  • Refusing to submit worked script to the Supervisor after the examination.
  • Starting to write an examination before commencement of work is officially announced OR continuing to write after official orders have been given for candidates to stop work.
  • Other irregular activities including but not limited to causing noise or disturbances within the immediate precincts of the examination hall before, during or after the examination.
