University of Ghana Suspends Senior Lecturer for Sexual Harassment

The University of Ghana has announced the suspension of Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah, a senior lecturer in the Sociology Department, for two semesters following allegations of sexual harassment.
This action, outlined in a notice dated March 12, 2025, and signed by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, comes as part of broader disciplinary measures taken against Dr. Appiah and 16 students for various forms of misconduct.
Dr. Appiah’s suspension stems from his violation of the University’s Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy, specifically Section 1.1(A), as well as Section 10.0 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff. These violations relate to inappropriate behavior that goes against the institution’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for both staff and students.

The University of Ghana has further emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of conduct and behavior within its community. A statement from the administration called on all members of the University to familiarize themselves with the regulations and adhere to the expected standards of conduct, in order to ensure a positive and respectful academic environment for everyone.
This suspension sends a strong message that the University of Ghana is committed to addressing sexual harassment and other forms of misconduct seriously, ensuring that such behaviors do not go unpunished and fostering a safer academic community.
