Unemployed Diploma Teachers Urge Government to Address Longstanding Backlog

A group of diploma-holding teachers from the 46 accredited public Colleges of Education across Ghana is appealing to the government to urgently address their prolonged unemployment, which they say has persisted since the introduction of the teacher licensure examination in 2018.
The group, known as the Unemployed Diploma Backlog Teachers, comprises graduates from the 2018 to 2020 batches who have remained jobless despite fulfilling all required academic and professional qualifications. According to the group, the introduction of the licensure exam created systemic delays and backlogs, leaving many graduates stranded without employment.
In a statement issued by the group’s leadership, they revealed that numerous attempts to engage both the previous and current administrations have yielded no results. “We wrote several letters to the former government and staged peaceful picketing exercises, but our efforts were ignored. The Ministry of Education cited the lack of financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance, yet all follow-up communications to the Finance Ministry were met with silence,” the statement read.
The group expressed renewed hope that the current administration, which has pledged to create jobs and enhance the welfare of Ghanaians, will take a fresh look at their plight. “We are not asking for handouts. We are trained professionals ready to serve our country and support the development of our education sector,” they emphasized.
The group is calling on the government to engage them in dialogue and provide a roadmap for their integration into the education system. They believe that with political will and administrative commitment, their situation can be resolved, helping to ease unemployment among graduates and strengthen basic education delivery in the country.
“We are eager to contribute our quota to national development. All we ask is for an opportunity to serve,” they said.
The group is led by:
- Yopee Raymond (President) – Jasikan College of Education
- Christabel Sedinam (Vice President) – St. Teresa’s College of Education, Hohoe
- Darku Saviour Korsi (Member) – Jasikan College of Education
- Ntem David (Member) – Akatsi College of Education
- Akpaku Daniel (Member) – Peki College of Education
- Asiamah Abena Asantewaa (General Secretary) – Holy Spirit College of Education
The Unemployed Diploma Backlog Teachers remain hopeful that their voices will be heard and that the government will act swiftly to address their longstanding concerns.
