Tragedy at UMaT Takoradi Campus: Final-Year Student Poisoned After Receiving UK Scholarship

A cloud of sorrow has descended on the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Takoradi Campus, following the sudden and tragic death of a third-year Logistics and Transport student, who was allegedly poisoned just a day after being awarded a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom.

The student, whose name is being withheld for privacy, hailed from Pomposo, a suburb of Obuasi in the Ashanti Region. Described by friends and lecturers as brilliant, humble, and full of promise, the young man was on the verge of beginning a life-changing journey abroad when tragedy struck.

According to preliminary accounts from close friends, the student had shared the good news of his scholarship award on campus only hours before he reportedly fell ill. He was rushed to a nearby medical facility but was pronounced dead shortly after. Allegations of poisoning quickly surfaced, raising suspicions about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The student’s parents, who live in Pomposo, are said to be devastated and overwhelmed with grief. With limited financial resources, the family is struggling to pursue a formal police investigation into their son’s death. Their cries for justice have so far gone unheard, as they seek both emotional and legal support to understand what truly happened to their beloved son.

Community members and student colleagues have expressed outrage and disbelief, calling for a thorough investigation and for the authorities to step in. “He worked so hard, and just when his life was about to change, this happened. We can’t let his story end like this,” said one of his classmates.

Human rights advocates and concerned citizens are appealing to the Ghana Police Service, the Ministry of Education, and scholarship bodies to intervene and support the grieving family. Many have also taken to social media to amplify the family’s plea for justice using hashtags such as #JusticeForUMaTStudent and #SupportPomposoFamily.

UMaT authorities have yet to release an official statement, but the Takoradi campus has remained somber since the news broke, with students holding small vigils in memory of their colleague.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the need for enhanced student safety measures on campuses and stronger support systems for families in times of crisis.
