Three Dead, Four Rescued in Abandoned Mining Pit Tragedy at Twifo-Mampong

A tragic incident at Twifo-Mampong in the Twifo Atti-Mokwa District has left three people dead and four others rescued after they were trapped in an abandoned mining pit.

According to local reports, the victims, believed to be mostly young men, had secretly entered the site, which has remained inactive for nearly five years following the closure of operations by a Chinese mining company.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Isaac Yawson, confirmed the incident to Adom News. He stated that the bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Twifo Praso morgue for autopsy and further investigations.

Though the identities of the victims are yet to be officially confirmed, they are suspected to be natives of Mampong. The DCE further revealed that the incident occurred on a Wednesday, a day traditionally regarded as a “sacred no-go day” for the forest. On such days, farming, mining, and other activities are strictly prohibited.

Investigations suggest that several young people in the community have been engaging in illegal mining at night, despite the risks. Mr. Yawson disclosed that the local chief has pledged to support law enforcement by ensuring that individuals caught flouting the rules will be arrested.

The tragedy has reignited concerns over the dangers posed by abandoned mining pits in the district, as well as the persistence of illegal mining among the youth despite community restrictions and government interventions.
