Teacher Shot by Armed Robbers While on Duty at Yerikoi in Savannah Region

A teacher at Yerikoi in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region has been left battling for his life after being shot by armed robbers while carrying out his professional duties.

According to sources, the tragic incident occurred as the teacher was reportedly returning from or heading to his place of work when he encountered the assailants. The armed men are said to have attacked him without provocation, leaving him with severe gunshot wounds.

He is currently receiving treatment at the Upper West Regional Hospital, where medical personnel are working tirelessly to stabilize his condition.

The incident has sparked fear and concern among residents, particularly teachers and education stakeholders in the region, who say the growing insecurity poses a threat to the already fragile state of rural education.

Many have taken to social media and community platforms to call on the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant authorities to ensure the safety of teachers, especially those posted to remote and underserved communities.

“We cannot continue to risk our lives just to educate the future leaders of this country,” one teacher from the district lamented.

Stakeholders have urged the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Interior to prioritize security measures for teachers in rural areas, including regular police patrols and transportation support.

As the injured teacher continues to receive care, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and other unions are also expected to issue official statements and possibly take action to demand justice and enhanced protection for their members.

Further updates will be provided as investigations into the matter unfold.
