Security personnel block students’ presser on the Legon campus, causing confusion
After security personnel blocked students from having a planned press conference, there was uncertainty on the University of Ghana – Legon campus.
The Mensah Sarbarh and Commonwealth Halls students were to host the conference on December 27, 2022.
According to reports, the news conference was held in opposition to management choices on the continuation of student housing and a fee increase for the 2023–2024 academic year.
A team of police officers and university security officers intervened to stop the activity, claiming the organizers had not obtained permission from the appropriate parties, especially given that the school was out of session.
Selasie Amu, who was on the scene, claimed that the organizer’s attempts to hold the news conference, even at Okponglo, were all unsuccessful.
The event was eventually transferred to the Erata Hotel, where the organizers voiced their opposition to Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah continuing students being forbidden from returning to these or any other traditional halls.
In August 2022, after recommendations from the residence and academic boards of the University Council of the two halls, there were violent altercations amongst the student occupants of the two buildings.
