Ministry of Education Orders Probe into Violence at Agona Swedru Schools Athletics Games

The Ministry of Education has condemned, in the strongest terms, acts of violence captured in viral videos linked to a disturbance during the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru in the Central Region.

In a statement signed by Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Abas Apaak, the Ministry described the scenes as unacceptable and directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately investigate the matter.

According to the statement, the Director-General has been instructed to meet the Central Regional Director of GES, the relevant district directors, and the heads of the two schools involved at 10:00am on 23 February 2026 at the GES headquarters in Accra.

“Even as we await the report from the Director-General of the GES, let me state that the Minister for Education and I take a very serious view of these acts of violence. Consequently, the culprits and perpetrators can expect the most severe sanctions,” the statement emphasised.

The development follows a violent incident that disrupted the inter-schools athletics competition held on 19 February in Agona Swedru.

The Ghana Police Service has also launched an investigation into the incident, which reportedly stemmed from a confrontation between students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).

Eyewitness accounts indicate that tensions escalated during the event, leading to a physical altercation. A student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School was allegedly attacked by a group believed to be from SWESBUS.

The victim was reportedly struck with sticks and pelted with stones before bystanders intervened to restore calm. Videos circulating on social media show scenes of confusion, with the injured student surrounded by a crowd as the disturbance unfolded.

The student was subsequently transported to a health facility, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected after the scheduled meeting at the GES headquarters.
